Maturity assessment

Desqcon Consulting NextGen ITSM and ITOM maturity assessment framework

In today’s digital-first business environment, organizations rely heavily on IT services to deliver value, ensure resilience, and enable innovation. Our framework gives you a structured, evidence-based read on exactly where you stand across ITSM, ITOM, CMDB, hardware asset management, and software asset management.

This is an online ITSM and ITOM maturity assessment, so you can complete it from the comfort of your home or office. When you want more depth, we also offer a detailed onsite maturity assessment run by our consultants with your teams.

Why take it

Know where you stand before you spend on tools or headcount

Most improvement programs start with a vendor demo or the loudest stakeholder, not with evidence. A maturity assessment replaces both with a baseline you can defend in front of a steering committee. It shows which practices carry the load, which are being worked around, and what to fix first. PeopleCert, the custodian of ITIL, positions its own assessments around the same purposes: improvement planning, progress monitoring, and benchmarking.

Evidence

Get a baseline you can defend

Scores by domain and by process give leadership a fixed point to measure progress against, instead of a debate about impressions.

Focus

Stop fixing process problems with tools

When the result shows a Level 2 process running on a heavily customized platform, the next investment is process design, not another module.

Priority

Rank the work by risk and value

Findings are sequenced so limited budget and people go first to the gaps that carry the most exposure.

Assurance

Walk into audits prepared

Vendor audits are routine. Reviewing asset, license and CMDB discipline shows your exposure before a vendor does.

Readiness

Check AI readiness honestly

AI features sit on top of your data, knowledge and process. The assessment shows whether that foundation can carry them.

Business case

Give the steering committee something to approve

A scored, evidenced result turns a request for budget into a decision backed by findings, not by preference.

Who should take it

Built for the people who own the outcome

The assessment is useful wherever someone has to make a decision about service management, operations tooling or IT assets and needs facts to make it.

CIOs and heads of IT

You need a defensible baseline before committing budget, headcount or a platform change.

ITSM and service delivery managers

You run the processes daily and want evidence of where they hold up and where they depend on individual effort.

Asset management leads

You own hardware or software assets and need to show where records, licenses and lifecycle controls are exposed.

CMDB and platform owners

You are asked why the data is not trusted and need to separate a data problem from an ownership or process problem.

Risk, audit and compliance

You need evidence of control maturity for ISO/IEC 20000-1 preparation or an internal audit.

Transformation sponsors

You are planning an ITSM, ITOM or AI program and need to sequence it on facts, not preference.

Common moments to run one

A new platform or a migration between ServiceNow, Jira Service Management, BMC Helix, Freshservice or Ivanti A new CIO or IT leadership team A merger, acquisition or divestiture An upcoming vendor audit or contract renewal Preparing for ISO/IEC 20000-1 certification Plans to introduce AI agents or AIOps Moving service delivery to or from a managed service provider

Maturity profile across six domains

People 2.8Process 3.1Tools 3.6Automation 2.2AI 1.6Governance 2.5
Each domain is scored from 0 to 5. The overall score is the average of the six, so a strong tool cannot hide a weak process.
  • Overall maturity scoreOne number on a 0 to 5 scale that leadership can track from one assessment to the next.
  • Domain scoresPeople, process, tools, automation, AI and governance scored separately, so you see exactly where the weight sits.
  • How each process is doingProcess by process: where it is documented but not followed, and where it depends on individuals.
  • Gap analysisCurrent level against a realistic target for your size and risk profile, across people, process and tools.
  • RecommendationsPrioritized actions, split into quick wins and structural changes, each tied to the gap it closes.
  • RoadmapA phased plan with sequencing, dependencies and ownership, reviewed with you in a working session.

How your score is given

Every question offers answer options that map to maturity levels, plus an unsure option that is left out of the score rather than counted as low. A domain score is the average of its answered questions on a 0 to 5 scale, so a domain with mostly Level 3 answers scores close to 3.0. The overall score is the average of the six domain scores.

Your overall score lands on this curve. The example marker shows a score of 2.6, which means mostly Defined practices with some areas still at Developing.

What each level means for you

Level 1 · Around 1Ad HocWork gets done, but nothing is dependable. Outcomes depend on who is on shift, and you see firefighting, repeat incidents and thin data.
Level 2 · Around 2DevelopingThe basics exist: a tool, a rotation, a rough process. They are applied unevenly and rarely measured. Quick wins are plentiful here.
Level 3 · Around 3DefinedProcesses are documented, agreed and applied consistently. Roles and escalation paths are clear whoever is on duty. Often the right first target.
Level 4 · Around 4ManagedThe process is measured. KPIs are tracked and reviewed on a cadence, and drift is caught early. Decisions use data, not anecdote.
Level 5 · Around 5OptimizedImprovement is continuous and evidence-led. Automation removes manual toil, and the organization pursues efficiency, not just stability.

The levels follow the capability model used on our scoring methodology page, adapted from CMMI Institute capability levels and the ITIL 4 maturity model.

What the roadmap looks like

Phase 1First 90 daysQuick wins, named process owners, and fixes to the data and records that block everything else.
Phase 2Months 3 to 6Process redesign, tool configuration back to the designed process, and reporting that drives decisions.
Phase 3Months 6 to 12Integration, automation and AI use cases, added where the foundation can carry them.

Illustrative structure. Your roadmap is sequenced from your own findings, constraints and budget.

Holistic evaluation

Across people, process, tools, automation, AI, and governance

We benchmark against globally recognized standards, ITIL 4, Agile, SIAM, IT4IT, and Lean, so the assessment is comprehensive and aligned with modern service management practice. Each domain has its own guide explaining why it matters and how we assess it.
