Software Asset Management is growing just as fast on its own track: four independent forecasts put the SAM software market anywhere from $7.3 billion to $15.9 billion depending on scope and methodology — with every forecast agreeing on double-digit annual growth.

Why asset inventories drift out of date

Where AI, Generative AI, and Agentic AI are taking IT asset management
AI-assisted discovery and usage analytics. Machine learning increasingly fingerprints devices from network behavior and flags anomalies a rules-based scan would miss, while on the software side it predicts which licenses will go unused before the renewal date arrives.
Generative AI for reconciliation and contract intelligence. GenAI is being applied to let asset managers ask plain-language questions of the asset database, and to parse dense, inconsistent license agreements into a structured, queryable format — cutting the manual work on both the hardware and software sides.
Agentic AI — promising, but early. The logical next step is autonomous workflows that don’t just flag a discrepancy but act on it directly: opening a ticket, right-sizing a subscription, triggering a decommission or reclamation workflow. Gartner’s June 2025 research estimated that over 40% of agentic AI projects across IT functions will be canceled by the end of 2027, largely due to unclear ROI and unresolved data-quality foundations. The practical implication is the same on both sides of ITAM: agentic automation is only as trustworthy as the underlying asset and entitlement data feeding it.
Our view: expect the next two to three years to bring AI-assisted discovery, usage forecasting and contract intelligence into mainstream ITAM tooling first, with autonomous, action-taking agents following once organizations have proven their asset data is clean enough to trust with the decision.
